Bear Burger, New York

One of the best gluten free places I’ve ever eaten is BareBurger in New York.

Keep in mind that we’d struggled to find somewhere close to the hotel which offered a decent gluten free menu. As those of you with dietary restrictions will know, options are usually limited to a salad or the most unappetising option possible. Once we found this place, it all changed!

The staff were really friendly from the outset and had a great knowledge of what we could and couldn’t eat. They were also really good at making suggestions of what could be changed in the menu to cater for our allergies.

Set in a quirky little venue, the lightshades were made of forks and the decor was quite rustic in style. The menu was mostly organic but always natural, meaning that you can eat guilt free! The best thing about this place? The burgers are huge!!! When they arrived at our table, we worries that we might not finish them all – especially as the chips were also gluten free!

Most gluten free buns are ‘okay’ at best – usually a bit dry, a bit crumbly; but this place has it cracked!

As for cross- contamination, although they use the same kitchen, they do have separate areas for cooking gluten free and vegan options.

BareBurger became the ‘go to’ place for us on our trip.

Simply Raw Bakery, Vienna

There are the obvious places in Vienna where it’s easy to get something to meet your dietary needs: looking at you Hard Rock and TGI Fridays – they do good food, are extremely well up on cross- contamination and were well aware of how to adapt meals to meet our needs.

However, one of the big stand out places on our visit wasn’t one of the big chains but a little café called Simply Raw Bakery.

“A cute little vintage café which only held around five tables, plus bar seating. This meant it was cosy, although it never felt cramped, even when it was full. Tea was served in little teapots and the clink of china filled the spaces between the chatter.

The breakfasts were amazing – tasty porridge with fruit was my favourite – I didn’t know that porridge could taste so good!!!

+ Wood-burning stove keeps things toasty on cold Vienna days

Toto’s Burger Place

Located right on the front of the pier, this little gem is really easy to find. With indoor and outdoor seating, it was a good place to sit and watch the world go by.

+ Staff were really knowledgeable about the contents of the food and offered suggestions to swap out ingredients and sauces that might not be suitable. They were also well aware of cross contamination too.

+ Lots of variety – burgers (with great tasting burger buns), pasta and salads that were all dairy and gluten free.

+ Quick service

Marta’s Veggie Fusion

Huddled down one of the winding streets inside the palace walls, Marta’s is a treat for Vegan / Gluten Free dietary needs. We were here twice – gorgeous food and very friendly staff. Top tip, get the chips to take away and sit on the steps outside Luxor to watch the live musicians play the night away.
